The Ranger Fund
With the help of the Department of Natural Resources and the Village of Whiting, North Central Conservancy Trust (NCCT) was able to acquire ownership of the old DNR Ranger Station in Lower Whiting Park in 2019. We are currently transforming the building into our Land Conservation Center! The Land Conservation Center is NCCT’s new office and allows our organization the opportunity to grow, collaborate, and advance our mission!
NCCT requires significant funding to make necessary renovations to the former Ranger Station. The building had not been updated since it was built in 1960, but with your help NCCT has been able to make significant improvements to the building and property to make the space functional and energy-efficient. See the virtual tour given by former Executive Director, Janet Smith, in the video below. Since that video was produced, NCCT supporters successfully generated enough funds for a new solar array, brand new heating & cooling system for the building, new exterior windows, insulation replacement, along with many other much needed improvements.
Freeman Legacy Tree
Want your name on the Freeman Legacy Tree?
Any monetary donation, in-kind, or volunteer service given to the Ranger Fund valued at $150 or more, will add your name to the tree to honor and recognize your generous gift.
The Freeman Legacy Tree was painted by the talented Shelby Weber, an art teacher at Almond/Bancroft School District, and is located in the main conference room of our office.

2022 Energy Efficiency Fundraiser - Complete!
Although NCCT has made significant progress towards the Land Conservation Center, there are still a few major improvements needed. A professional energy audit was conducted in 2021 that determined the old windows on the building are about 60 years old, in poor condition, and are not able to effectively help regulate the temperature of the office. The audit also found that the ceiling is very permeable, thus contributing to energy loss, and the attic insulation is insufficient with some repair work needed. Several of us got together and submitted a grant application on NCCT’s behalf to help cover the significant costs of these much needed renovations. BIG NEWS! NCCT was awarded $26,136 from the Public Service Commission’s Energy Innovation Grants Program! The total cost of the energy efficiency renovation project is estimated to be around $34,848 meaning NCCT needed to raise at least $8,712 more dollars to meet the total anticipated project cost. We set a fundraising goal at $10,000 to ensure that the project costs would be covered in hopes of exceeding the goal in order to ensure our Ranger Fund can provide a source of funds for continued maintenance of this wonderful building.
NCCT members, supporters, and local energy efficiency enthusiasts met the fundraiser’s goal in several short weeks thanks to a leading donation of $4,500 made by an anonymous supporter to be used as a match challenge. Thank you to all who supported this effort!
